Power-UpsOverview

Power-Ups

Power-ups add a strategic twist to your trivia games. They let players go beyond just answering questions — you can steal time from opponents, remove wrong answers, boost your score, and more. Every game becomes a little more unpredictable (and a lot more fun).

[!NOTE] Power-ups are a PRO/subscriber feature. The host needs an active subscription to enable them. Check out the Subscription page for plan details.

How It Works

During gameplay, every few questions (configurable — default is every 2 questions), a dedicated Power-Up Selection phase kicks in. All players get a short window (default 15 seconds) to pick a power-up from the available options. Choose wisely, because each player only has a limited number of uses per session (default 2).

Here is the flow:

  1. Trigger — After every X questions, the game enters a Power-Up Selection phase.
  2. Choose — Each player sees the available power-ups and picks one (or skips).
  3. Activate — The selected power-up takes effect on the next question.
  4. Impact — Depending on the power-up, you help yourself or sabotage an opponent!

The Five Power-Up Types

TriviaNow includes five unique power-ups, each with its own playstyle. Some target yourself to gain an advantage, and others target opponents to slow them down.

Power-UpEffectTarget
Time ThiefSteals 10 seconds from an opponent’s timerOpponent
50/50 EraserRemoves two incorrect answer optionsYourself
HintsShows a helpful hint for the questionYourself
Points MultiplierMultiplies your score (2x, 3x, etc.)Yourself
Avatar AmbushDistracts an opponent with a visual effectOpponent

[!TIP] Not sure which power-up to pick? Self-targeting power-ups like 50/50 Eraser and Hints are great for boosting your own performance. If you want to play offense, Time Thief and Avatar Ambush let you mess with the competition.

For Hosts

Power-ups are fully configurable. You control how often they appear, how many each player gets, and which types are available. Head over to Configuring Power-Ups to learn how to fine-tune the experience for your sessions.
